I have a confession.
I love making amigurumi fruits and veggies and putting cute little faces on them. There, I said it. And at this point in my life I’m pretty sure it’s an obsession that’s not going anywhere. I couldn’t help myself when I came up with this Cheery Cherry Amigurumi pattern!
You only have to make three pieces for this project, the two cherries and the stem/leaf combo. That’s right! The stems and leaves are made together – I had wanted to come up with leaves and stems that could be done in one piece and sewn on. The less pieces to sew on the better, right? After the pattern there is a full stem/leaf photo tutorial, as well as photos to help show you how to create the face.
These amigurumi cherries are beginner friendly and super easy to make. Plus, they’re smallish so you could make a whole bowl full of cherries rather quickly. Or just give a pair to someone you love cherry much.
sc (single crochet}
ch (chain)
inc (increase): Make 2 single crochet stitches into the same stitch.
dec (decrease): Insert hook under front loop only of next two stitches, yarn over, draw through through first two loops on hook, yarn over, draw through remaining two loops to finish.
sl st (slip stitch)
Gauge is not terribly important here as long as you are producing a nice tight fabric so that the polyfil won’t pop through your stitches.
Finishes cherries/stem measure approximately 3.5″ tall and both cherries together measure appriximately 9″ around.
This pattern is written using US terminology.
Cherries are made in continuous rounds rather than joined rounds.
Please note that I crochet left-handed and my photo guides may reflect this. If you crochet right-handed (with your hook in your right hand), all the stitches are the same and will look the same, you will simply be working in the opposite direction as I am.
Please do not copy or sell my pattern in any way. You are welcome to sell finished objects made using my pattern. I only ask for you to please credit me so that other makers can find my patterns as well.
Using E(3.5mm) hook and red yarn:
Rnd 1: Make 6 sc into magic ring.
Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (12)
Rnd 3: [Sc 1, inc in next st] 6 times. (18)
Rnd 4: {Sc 2, inc in next st] 6 times. (24)
Rnds 5-9: [Sc all around]. (24)
Here is where you should create the face. Place safety eyes between rows 8 and 9, leaving four spaces in between them. Embroider mouth. See below for photo tutorial.
Row 10: [Sc 2, dec] 6 times. (18)
Stuff the body, being careful not to overfill.
Row 11: [Sc, dec] 6 times. (12)
Row 12: Dec 6 times. (6)
Thread yarn needle and pass through remaining stitches, pull tight to close. Tie off and weave in ends.
Place safety eyes in between rows 8 and 9, leaving 4 spaces between them.
For the mouth, working from back to front, insert needle through where you’d like the mouth to start.
Now, insert the needle 1-2 stitches down in a straight line where you want the smile to end.
You should have a straight line just like this.
Now, to anchor the smile. First, using either your finger or the back of your needle, loosen the thread a little and pull it down to form the downward arc shape of the smile.
Now, insert needle through the top of the smile in the center.
Pull your thread all the way through and insert needle underneath the smile. Try to insert through the same point where you just passed the needle through the top of the smile.
Pull thread all the way through, tie a knot, and snip ends.
Using F(3.75mm) hook, make a slip knot, leaving a tail at least 5-6 inches long. Ch 40. Beginning in second ch from hook, sl st in each stitch to end. Finish off leaving a long tail of at least 10 inches.
Hold stem so the two ends are at the bottom. Make sure the ends are lined up evenly with each other.
Keeping the ends even with each other, grab the top of the stem.
Bring the top forward and down, creating two “leaf loops”. Make sure to leave each stem about 6-7 stitches long.
I like to pin at this point so everything stays in place.
Thread your yarn needle with the longer tail and start working up towards your “leaf loops”.
Once here, we’re going to sew together corresponding stitches to form a closed leaf shape.
Working inside the “leaf loop”, sew the innermost loops of each stitch together.
Once done sewing the stitches of the one leaf together, begin making your way to the center of your two leaves by passing the yarn needle through each stitch.
Push yarn needle through the center where your pin is – this will hold everything together once you remove your pin.
Now repeat the process of sewing up the remaining leaf loop.
Once done, weave down the outside of the leaf and continue weaving the tail down the stem.
And now the stem and leaves are done – it should look something similar to this.
Flip it over and attach one stem to the top center of each of your cherries using the two tails that you now have on each side.
Fasten off and weave in and enjoy your new cherries!
